Texas College Student Shot and Killed by Brazoria County Deputy Inside Garage
A Texas State University student died last Monday morning after a Brazoria County sheriff’s deputy shot him inside his vehicle.
The fatal shooting occurred in a residential garage in Lake Jackson following a brief vehicular pursuit.
Dozens of local demonstrators marched through the streets on Friday night to protest the death of 21-year-old John Mendoza Jr.
Protesters chanted for transparency and accountability while carrying signs bearing the deceased student’s name.
The legal confrontation began when a Brazoria County sheriff’s deputy attempted to initiate a standard traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Mendoza.
Mendoza was driving home for the summer semester with friends in the car after completing his classes at Texas State University in San Marcos.
Law enforcement officials stated that Mendoza failed to pull over immediately for the emergency lights.
Surveillance cameras from nearby residential properties captured images of the short pursuit through the Lake Jackson neighborhood.
The vehicle tracking ended when Mendoza drove into his family’s home garage.
A responding deputy fired multiple rounds into the vehicle while Mendoza sat behind the steering wheel.
Family members confirmed that Mendoza was entirely unarmed during the entire encounter.
Medical personnel pronounced the college student dead at the scene inside his vehicle.
“They took the life of a young man, just reckless and senseless acts of abuse of power, and for nothing, for nothing,” said the victim’s father, John Mendoza Sr.
The grieving father noted that his son cannot tell his own story, requiring the family to speak publicly on his behalf.
Mendoza was a prominent local football player who maintained a position on the academic dean’s list at his university.
Family members describe the deceased student as a dedicated friend and a well-behaved young man who avoided trouble.
“My nephew was murdered in cold blood; that’s exactly what that was,” said the victim’s aunt, Glenda Mendoza.
The Texas Rangers and the local District Attorney’s Office have assumed control of the active investigation.
State investigators confirmed early this week that they will present the complete investigative file to a local grand jury for review.
The Mendoza family stated they want District Attorney Tom Selleck to secure a formal murder indictment from the grand jury panel.
Local community leaders and family members are also formally requesting that the federal Department of Justice initiate an independent civil rights probe.
“Let’s do what’s right; let’s get transparency done because it’s the right thing to do,” Mendoza Sr. stated during the Friday evening demonstration.
Investigators have not yet released public information explaining the initial reason for the attempted traffic stop.
The identity of the specific deputy who fired the fatal shots remains withheld by the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office pending the ongoing review.
Neighbors expressed concern over the use of lethal force within a quiet residential sector of Lake Jackson.
Local community safety advocates recommend that residents remain inside their homes and document any visible police activity from a safe distance using smartphones.
Legal experts note that grand jury reviews for officer-involved shootings in Brazoria County typically require several weeks to process collected evidence.
Glenda Mendoza publicly expressed her enduring affection for her nephew and vowed to continue protesting until the county releases all official records.
The Texas Rangers are asking anyone with additional home surveillance footage or eyewitness information regarding the pursuit to contact their regional office immediately.
