The word gist has lots of meaning in the English language and as slang.

Well, most of the time when the word is used, it refers to the main subject or details, of a piece of information.

According to Merriam-webster, “Gist was borrowed from the Anglo-French legal phrase laccion gist (“the action lies or is based [on]”) in the 17th century, and it was originally used in law as a term referring to the foundation or grounds for a legal action without which the action would not be legally sustainable.”

When a friend asks you to tell him a gist during texting or chat, he is basically saying you should tell him about your day, an interesting movie you watched, a rumour you heard, your new girlfriend/boyfriend, your past experiences, your hobbies, about work, naughty stories and lot’s more.
