A 5-year-old boy lost his life after a shooting inside an apartment in the Kenwood neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.

The heartbreaking event unfolded on Sunday afternoon, leaving a family in grief and authorities searching for answers.

Police responded to the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue around 1:17 p.m. after reports of a shooting.

The young boy suffered a gunshot wound to the head while inside the apartment. Emergency responders rushed him to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, but doctors pronounced him dead later that day.

Investigators recovered a firearm at the scene, but details about how the shooting happened remain unclear.

No arrests have been made, and police have not confirmed if the incident was accidental. Pastor Donovan Price, who supported the family, told reporters the child may have accessed a gun and shot himself.

“The child got a hold of a gun and shot himself,” Price said. He added that the boy’s sister called 911 and began driving him to the hospital before help arrived.

Price described the family’s pain: “It’s a combination of grief and trying to process and facing reality. Trying to really figure out what happened.”

He stressed the need for safety measures around children, saying, “When a child is in the house, you have to do everything. It’s like child-proofing a house with the electrical system. You have to go the extra mile.”

Relatives gathered at the hospital into the evening to say goodbye. The boy’s identity has not been released by officials. Chicago police continue their investigation, with no further updates provided as of Monday morning.
