An 11-year-old girl from Texas was fatally shot by her father in a hunting accident Saturday, authorities said.

Daisy Grace Lynn George, of Hallsville, died near the Texas-Louisiana border, according to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, a dispatch operator received multiple calls shortly after 5 p.m. CST, KETK-TV reported. Further calls determined that a man had accidentally shot his daughter with a high-powered rifle at a hunting lease in Hallsville, the television station reported.

Medical personnel originally called for George to be flown to an area hospital, but all helicopters were grounded in the area due to inclement weather, the Longview News-Journal reported. The sixth grader was then transported by an emergency vehicle to a hospital in Longview, the newspaper reported.

Despite lifesaving efforts, George died at the hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

“Anytime a young person loses their life, it’s tragic for all involved,” Harrison County Sheriff Brandon Fletcher said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends during this difficult time.”

Officials with the sheriff’s office and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Game Warden will conduct a joint investigation, KFDM reported.
